Colored Pasta Beads

1 cup pasta per color (I used Ditalini)
2 TBSP rubbing alcohol
2-3 drops food coloring (I used Wilton coloring gels)
Place rubbing alcohol and coloring in a ziploc sandwich bag. Mix together. Add in pasta and shake to coat well. Repeat with each color. Drain off excess liquid. Place on a foil lined cookie sheet and allow to dry for one hour (I let mine dry overnight).
Liam gave me the necklace that he created...my very first mom's macaroni necklace! I am keeping this one for sure and wearing it to the movies this afternoon. I mean...you have to dress up to see the Princess and the Frog, right?

I love how your colors came out, do you have the amt of food coloring you used to get the colors you have? We just did this and our colors dont look as nice as yours ha ha ha
Rumpsack...I just had Wilton gel food colors on hand so I used those.
just made these too. My colors did not come out as vibrant as yours either. I followed the ratio and even re-did some of them, but still not as bright....mine as a tad dull. Great idea and thanks!
Having the church playgroup over tomorrow, the mom's are going to help me pack for my move and I just finished making 7 colors of these for the kids to play with while we work. Hoping they dry in this humid WA weather before morning...
Adorable idea! Wish I'd had cool ideas like this when my boys were little, but I have a grandchild on the way so, another chance to do fun projects! :)

I tried and the colors are dull (even with using 10 drops of food coloring) and since the noodles aren't "white" the colors are mixing with yellow. I tried to make blue macaroni noodles for my oldest and instead we got a dullish green. Maybe I'll try the Wilton's coloring and se if that helps.

Thanks for sharing the recipe, We are focusing on our colors right now with an all rainbow unit and we will be making macaroni necklaces tomorrow. I used some gel and some liquid colors to make mine and the gels are much more vibrant ! I cant wait to make them with the kids :)
what a great idea!! thank you for sharing! we did ours with regular food coloring & let it sit for a while so make the color more vibrant. it helped, but next time we will use the gel coloring.

did this tonight for my son and it was SO super easy! my blue came out more of a dark green than a blue, but otherwise they look great and soooooo much cheaper than buying beads!!! and he can use them to glue on paper etc besides just to make a necklace. tomorrow I'm going to color some other macaroni shapes (tiny shells and elbows) that he can use for art projects too!
Can I make these a few months in advance? (like two months?) Or is it best made right before being used? Im doing a lot of DIY beads, paint, glitter, etc., for my sons 3rd Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Arts and Crafts theme. So I want to get started from now. Thanks!
Yes, they can be made in advance and actually last for a long time. I am still using those beads in the picture and I made them how many years ago!
I did this with rice for rainbows at church. It turned out great. My daughter loved helping shake the bags.

What a fabulous idea and very economical! Amazing how people are so creative and always thinking! I would LOVE to see some of the creations people have made out of this macaroni craft!
