How To Make Your Pictures Larger On Your Blog

I get quite a few requests for knowing how I make my pictures larger here on my little ol’ blog. I have tried to explain it to a few people (so sorry about my very poor explanations!) and I get that look. You know that look of “are-we-even-speaking-the-same-language” look. And now I have figured out the problem…visual aids! I am sure larger pictures are not for everyone, but I absolutely love them on a blog. Some friend’s blogs (who shall remain nameless) have the tiniest pictures and however they upload them to the post, I can’t click on them to make them bigger. I want to see those adorable faces and the little details of the pictures, people! Lucky for me I have a wonderful Mac and thanks to the ‘control+scroll up’ combo, I can get a fuzzy bigger version of those pictures.

So a big thanks to my wonderful and super fabulous husband (because he searched all of this out for me over a year ago)…and for those of you who are interested…{NOTE: I am not promising that you will even understand these directions because I give horrible ones…and even worse ones when I try to write it down. I will try to make it as simple as possible. Not for you, but for me!}

Now, I don’t know if this will work if you have one of those fancy, adorable templates that you get from another site because you have to resize the middle of your blog or what is called your “wrapper”. Definitely save your html blog code and then give it a try. If it doesn’t work then you will need to go to a solid color background or design your own…(that one is way too complicated for me to post here so I will find you a link sometime.)

Here is how you resize your blog…

Go to your dashboard, then Layout, then Edit HTML.

Scroll down until you find the ‘outer wrapper’ and the ‘main wrapper’. My outer wrapper is resized to width: 970px and my main wrapper is width: 720px. Then save your changes, making sure you previewed them first.

Okay…easy enough. Now onto enlarging pictures.

Compose your post as you would any other time. Upload all of your pictures. I typically upload my pictures medium size and then enlarge those. You can upload them large if you want them super huge, but if you choose a landscape picture, it will be cut off on the sides. {SIDE NOTE: I have noticed that some of you whose blogs I read complain that you can’t seem to get your picture in the right spot. You always have the choice to cut and paste your picture exactly where you want it.)

Once you upload your pictures you want to go to your “Edit Html” tab on your post. Right next to the “Compose” tab. Each picture is given a certain size depending on whether you chose small, medium, or large when you uploaded it. This is the html for a medium picture. It’s size is width:320px by height:214px. NOW, don’t freak out if your numbers don’t match mine. It all depends on how you cropped it in your photo editing programs. What’s important is that you locate those width and height numbers AND the number that has a lower case ‘s’ in front of it. I don’t even know what it means, but just know you need to find it. In this case it is s320.
Here is my standard medium picture (not enlarged).

You simply need to double those numbers. In this case my width becomes 640, my height becomes 428 and that little ‘s’ number becomes s640. This works with every size. So if you don’t want your pictures too large you can upload them small and then enlarge them. They turn out slightly larger than the regular large uploaded picture. Just play around with it. If you find that your picture isn’t any larger, then check your math. If it still isn’t working, I don’t know what to tell you because I am not that computer smart. I just know what works on mine.

Here is the doubled medium picture.

I really hope some of you try this because big pictures can be fun. Feel free to leave me any more questions, but no promises I will even know what you are talking about!!!
