Kitchen Chair Refinish With Chalk Paint

Over the course of our marriage, we’ve inherited two old wooden church chairs.  You can actually see what they originally looked like HERE.  I ended up painstakingly sanding them down and staining them black.  We loved them because they went with all of our other black furniture.  Black, black, black!

Lately we started to lighten up our home and incorporate more whites and bright colors.  Once I heard about BBFrosch Chalk Paint I knew that was the solution I needed for these two chairs.  Only for the fact that you don’t have to sand off any preexisting paint or finish before you use it!

I ordered mine from my friends Kelli and Kristi over at  Lolly Jane and it came super quick!

All I had to do was wipe down my chairs to make sure they were clean and I got to work.  I followed the directions for the chalk paint and mixed it with Behr Baker Box #BL-W9.  I find that when you do paint a lighter color over a darker color, it tends to take a few more coats than normal.  With the chalk paint I still only did 3 coats.  I let each coat dry about 30 minutes in between.

I wanted to add a pop of color to the seat so I went with a few shades darker than our kitchen table.  You can see it HERE.  I mixed the chalk powder with Behr Island Aqua P450-5.  My pictures didn’t pick up how truly aqua it is.  It’s gorgeous and bright!

I forgot to take a picture of when I taped it off so just use your imagination!

I let that paint dry over night before I used the wax to seal it all up!  It was super easy to apply and wasn’t too smelly.  My chairs are rock solid now and have passed my little boy test.  All of the boys have been on them and they haven’t chipped or scrapped up one bit!

The chalk paint was so easy to use that we’ve got a few more projects lined up.  Now it’s just finding the time to do it all!
