Comfort Food Traditions

Every year on Halloween my mom used to make our family of three this easy chili. It was always freezing out so she made this to make sure I was warm while trick or treating.

So I’ve passed on the tradition to my family now. Even though we live in Texas and most years it’s warmer than cooler.

The reason I truly love this recipe is not only is it my mom’s recipe, but it’s so so easy to put together! During the cold months I keep these few ingredients on hand so If I need a quick dinner or am in the mood for something comforting I can put this together with ease.

Easy Chili also is a great recipe to make for the big game day, pour over hot dogs for Chili Dogs or even Chili Cheese Fries! My mom used to take leftover chili and bake it over Frito Chips. A great hearty dinner that’s even better when it’s topped with shredded cheese and sliced green onions.

Can You Freeze Chili?

The simple answer is, yes! And it’s even more simple to do so.

Be sure the chili is completely cooled before adding it to a large plastic freezer bag. You could always portion it out into 2 cup servings and place it in plastic containers like this from Amazon.

If you are freezing it in a plastic bag then you will want to place it in your freezer and lay it flat. This not only helps it to store better, but it will thaw our much quicker this way as well. Once it is completely frozen you can then store it upright like a book on a bookcase.

Be sure to mark the date you made the chili. Not the date you froze it. It will last in your freezer for up to a year.

How Do You Reheat Frozen Chili?

When you want to reheat your frozen chili you can do one of two methods. Remove it from the freezer and let it thaw in the refrigerator for a 2-3 days. Then simply pour it into a pot and bring it up to a low boil over medium high heat.

If you are wanting to eat it the same day you take it out of the freezer then place the bag or container in a large bowl full of cold water. This method will only take 2-3 hours. Pour the chili into a large pot and heat it through over medium high heat.

You can also microwave it once it has thawed. Place into a microwave proof bowl, cover with a paper towel and cook for 1 minute. Give it a stir and cook for another 60-90 seconds.

Easy Chili Made In 30 Minutes

Here’s how you make this incredibly easy recipe.

  1. In a large pot over medium high heat brown ground beef and diced onions together for 4-5 minutes.
  2. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Sprinkle in chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt and pepper and stir to combine. This helps bring bold flavor to the meat.
  4. Add in the chili beans (including the juice) and vegetable juice. Stir together.
  5. Bring the chili to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. Make sure to stir intermittently while it is simmering.
  7. Serve hot and top with your favorite toppings.
